Canvas Viking Jacket “Ragnvaldur the Traveller”
Historically inspired water resistant canvas viking jacket with leather embossed accent
He never really thought too hard about where he was going, he would simply wander where the stories sent him and roads led him. Through damp swamps, wetlands, and cliffs doused with the ocean spray… as long as there was eventually a fire to sit by and story to tell, you’d find him there. No matter how dreary climate, or how grim the evenings were, the traveller was always prepared and happy to greet any weather… after all, you don’t hear that many stories without becoming wise yourself.
We based the initial pattern design on the “Viborg” shirt, a historical find from Denmark thought to be dated from 1000-1300AD. While the original shirt was made from linen, we have given this garment our own unique twist and turned it into a robust jacket made for adventuring through the damp forest, exploring the frozen tundra or cooking around the fire under a light drizzle of rain! This jacket closes via a toggle on the right side of the jacket, which is off centre just like the Viborg Shirt, giving it a square-like appearance at the neckline. Roomy sleeves and plenty of gores make sure that although cosy, this jacket isn’t hugely restrictive. It has a slim fit silhouette and a slight flare out at the bottom, with side slits to make sure you have lots of room to move your legs when you walk.
We have created this jacket with a variety of premium materials that work together to make it extra special. The thick canvas is stiff and holds its shape very well, with an attractive weave that comes up excellently in photographs. It is a naturally water resistant material, and will keep you dry on your adventures through the rain. We still wouldn’t recommend standing under a waterfall, though! A square in the middle of the jacket gives it a beautiful decorative touch, with viking knot work embossed into the thin, supple leather. This touch is just enough to add a bit of style to the jacket without being overpowering or stealing the show. The sleeves and torso on the inside of the jacket are lined with a lovely linen, making sure it’s comfortable and not too rough against any exposed skin.
This jacket is finished off with a beautiful suede edging of the same colour as the canvas, tying the whole look together with robust, well finished seams. We’ve also added some decorative stitching to mimic the look of hand stitching, adding another dimension to the jacket that machines stitching can’t quite do!
The pattern is based on Viking Viborg Shirt design:
